Running along the east side of Spain, from Barcelona to Tarragona, the gold coast stretches for 150 miles - and, for most of that, it's an unbroken stretch of soft sands, lively resorts and shallow, safe waters. Salou, in particular, is great for families, offering round-the-clock entertainment, good bathing, excellent shopping and a range of accommodation to suit all budgets. Sitges is more cosmopolitan, with its big-name boutiques and high class dining. Wherever your trip takes you, make sure you check out the local Catalan dishes, hearty stews and casseroles based on the fruits of the sea, washed down with fruity local wines (try anything from Tarragona and you won't be disappointed). 

Catalonia - The Inside Story
Inland, as the coastal plains rise to meet the mountains, vineyards and olive groves, ancient villages and fascinating towns such as Reus and Montblanc, with its fine Gothic church or Penedes, one of Spain's chief Cava wine producing regions. Essentially, though, the Costa Dorada is a coast of good quality, family-friendly resorts - with plenty of services and activities designed specifically for children, from water parks and swimming pools to outdoor cinemas and amusement arcades. With so many excellent restaurants, bars and attractions prices stay low, which means that cheap holidays to Costa Dorada can be enjoyed even in high season.
