From the mountainous headland above Aghios Nikolaos, there's a spectacular view down along the coast to the pretty seaside village of Elounda, with its lovely church, overlooking the brightly-painted fishing boats in the little harbour. 

Visitors first came to Elounda for the wonderful fresh fish served in its waterfront restaurants. When they saw that the sheltered bay's clear waters are shallow and warm, the sandy beach - perfect for watersports - they decided they wanted to stay for more than just lunch, so now the peaceful village absorbs the holiday makers into its midst, whilst managing to retain the traditional relaxed pace in the summer sun. 

A short wander into the hills and you can still find the original old village of Elounda, which has still retained all its character and charm, or continue along the road to the tiny hamlet of Plaka, with its spectacular views of Spinalonga Island opposite. Elounda has friendly cocktail bars, which get pretty lively in high season and more shopping and sophisticated nightlife in Aghios Nikolaos, a twenty minute bus or taxi ride away.
