- Overview
The Dodecanese are the most southerly group of Greek islands and, because of their long distance from mainland Greece, these islands have been subject to a number of invasions. On Rhodes you'll find significant remains of the Romans, the Knights of St John, the Ottoman Empire and, of course, Ancient Greece itself.
Rhodes is the largest island of the Dodecanese and lies only seven miles off the coast of Turkey. Its mountainous interior is covered with lush green pine forests and fertile valleys and provides a wonderful opportunity to explore some beautiful countryside. Of course, Rhodes is also world-renowned for its beaches; head north for a taste of the lively resorts, or south of the island for the simpler pleasures of a slower pace of life.
Inhabited since Neolithic times, Rhodes began to flourish under the Dorians in the 11th century BC, who founded the oldest towns on Rhodes; Lindos, Kamiros and Ialysos. Rhodes Town itself was founded in 418BC, though much of the ancient city (including the famed Colossus of Rhodes) was destroyed by a series of massive earthquakes.
In 1309 the Knights of the Order of St John occupied the island, defending the island until the Ottoman Turks defeated them in 1523. After centuries of Turkish rule Rhodes was occupied by Italy in 1912, then Germany in 1943 and reunited at last with Greece in 1948.
Choose from the following resorts in Rhodes:
Pefkos
Pefkos is a small but expanding village close to Lindos, with an excellent beach that is perfect for families. Pefkos remains quiet and unspoilt and is still a hideaway for Lindians who want to escape from the summer invasion. Nightlife is confined to tavernas and small bars but at just three miles away, the Lindos nightlife is still accessible if required.
Trianda
Trianda was founded by the Cretan Minoans in the 16th century BC and has all the usual tourist facilities including family restaurants, bars and supermarkets. Recharge your batteries in this laid-back relaxing resort. With its local tavernas and restaurants, several low-key bars, and a range of smaller shops and supermarkets, life is leisurely in Trianda. The long shingle beach stretches to neighbouring Ixia.
Lindos
Lindos is a particularly popular holiday base with its remarkable acropolis and laid-back lifestyle. Lindos is marginally less famous than the island's capital, and its relatively uncrowded streets (at least in early mornings and evenings, when the day-trippers are away) arguably make it a better base for exploring the entire isle.
Faliraki
From a small fishing village just 20 years ago, the town is now a major resort with 20,000 tourist beds and a staggering choice of nightclubs, restaurants and bars. Apart from the nightlife, Faliraki's other main attraction is its 5km beach and the wide range of water sports available. Adults and children can try their hand at parascending, windsurfing and jet skiing, among others.
Rhodes Town
Most of the island's historic and impressive attractions lie in the capital, Rhodes Town. Founded in 408 BC when existing settlers formed a new capital, the town has since been coveted and occupied by Greeks and Romans, Crusaders and Venetians, and Ottomans and Germans - and each and every owner has added its own touch to the lustre of the incredibly unspoilt city, which was UNESCO-listed in the 1980s. Wander the medieval lanes of Rhodes Old Town and you can be transported back to the 14th century, whereas the New Town boasts lots of fine hotels, good night clubs, great bars, and splendid restaurants, as well as great water sports and beaches.
Ixia
A pretty village resort, Ixia has a long and beautiful shingle beach that stretches for as far as the eye can see - perfect for enjoying the sunny weather that Rhodes is famous for. The quiet and relaxing atmosphere attracts families and older couples, though the liveliness of Rhodes Town is only around 3 miles away!
