- Overview
Negril, arguably Jamaica's most successful holiday resort, owes its popularity to getting everything right - from its mix of all-inclusive resorts offering day and night entertainment, to its easy accessibility to most of the island's best attractions.
While its beach is justifiably busy, it's not difficult to find a blissful stretch of sand if you're not happy lazing by the pool all day - especially along Negril's famous 'Seven Mile Beach'. At the heart of Negril there's a dizzying amount of activities - from internet cafes to dive centres, latin clubs to duty-free shops.
If you want to get away from the crowds, take a breezy coastal walk to Negril lighthouse. The north end of the beach is home to the large, all-inclusive resorts, and to the south you'll find the resort's smaller, family-run hotels. This combination gives the Negril area its pleasing mix of tourists, facilities, shops and bars. The area offers easy access to coves just perfect for snorkelling and diving, with excellent dive schools ready to take you on an underwater adventure.
By day, action in the resort centres on the busy Norman Manley Boulevard. Across the bridge, shopping plazas, pizza joints and souvenir shacks make for a colourful jumble. The West End (also called The Rock) is where gnarled cliffs plunge to turquoise seas and reggae throbs all night from cliff top bars. It's a busy place, but, somehow, the vibe is still relaxed and tranquil. A trick you can only pull off in Jamaica.
