  • Overview

Ibiza's image as a full-on party island has not damaged its claim of being a simply beautiful island. While the young, cool brigade are catered for by every imaginable disco and bar this island has much more to offer. Partygoers may be too exhausted to ramble along cliff top paths or explore the wooded wilderness of the interior but families and couples who holiday to escape the noise and find tranquillity are also catered for by the infinite variety of this Balearic island.

Smaller than its neighbours Majorca and Menorca with a 220 square mile area Ibiza is packed with natural beauty. Its coastline facing Spain's east coast between Barcelona and Valencia offers long curving stretches of fine sand (great for beach parties and family outings) alternating with smaller, secluded rocky coves.

Its landscape is classic Mediterranean with shady groves of pines and olives, figs, junipers and palms. The profusion of these trees on Ibiza and tiny neighbour, Formentera, prompted the Greeks to call the islands, the Isles of Pines. For an exquisite view of these natural beauties as well as the Spanish mainland, drive up to the top of Mount Sa Talaia, Ibiza's highest spot.

Choose from the following resorts in Ibiza:

Port des Torrent

Ideal for families, couples and mature holidaymakers, this small purpose-built resort, with its restaurants, bars and shops and is conveniently situated at the end of San Antonio Bay. The attractive sandy beach offers water sports and boat trips to San Antonio town.

San Antonio & Bay

San Antonio pulls no punches. It's big, brash and lively, and its beach is packed with bronzing bodies. Just around the headland, however, accessible by boat or road, is a series of exquisite small bays with perfect sand, crystal clear water, flat rocks on which to sunbathe and often, a classy chiringuita (beach bar) for a seafood lunch washed down with a bottle of chilled rose. The wind and sand-blasted cliffs around the south west are a dramatic shade of ochre and the water at their base so clear that you can count the spiky black sea urchins on the sea bed. At night, the neon lights of the resort reflect hundreds of colours in the inky black of the bay, as the West End hots up for another massive party. But there's plenty for families, too, with quieter restaurants and pubs well away from the excesses of the Balearic Beat.

Cala Llonga

An informal, relaxed resort with a gently shelving sandy beach leading into a beautiful deep bay. A delightful rural setting and good selection of restaurants, cafes and tapas bars, make it perfect for families looking for a leisurely holiday.

Es Cana

Bustling and friendly, Es Cana offers a relaxed atmosphere and a lovely Blue Flag beach. Water sports are a favourite pastime, there is a good selection of cafes, bars and shops on the harbourside and the colourful weekly hippy market is always popular.

Santa Eulalia

Santa Eulalia and Es Cana, north east of Ibiza Town, represent Ibiza's quieter face. Unlike Sant Antoni, the main function of which is as a holiday resort, Santa Eulalia is a living, working town with a tiny rambla, a miniature version of its namesake in Barcelona; a sophisticated marina; and inland from the port, and a not-to-be-missed tree-lined avenue perfect for strolling down.

Playa Den Bossa

The long, sandy, Blue Flag beach has undoubtedly made Playa d'en Bossa one of the most popular resorts on the island. With plentiful water sports and a nearby waterpark, this is a great choice for families and couples. There are plenty of restaurants, bars and shops too and if you fancy something more upbeat, Ibiza Town is just a 10-minute drive away.

Portinatx

Secluded Portinatx is a picturesque retreat, with pine covered headlines, carefully developed around three sandy cove beaches. This resort is peaceful by day but comes alive at night with music and entertainment at the local bars and restaurants. Browse the Sunday hippy market for gifts and souvenirs.
