  • Overview

Florida. Where do we start?! Long held to be the ultimate family holiday experience, there are more theme parks here than anywhere else in the world and the sun almost never stops shining all year round. But delve a little deeper and you'll find a number of national parks and outstanding areas of natural beauty, and if that wasn't enough, countless unbelievably stunning sandy beaches that are wrapped round the 'sunshine state', making Florida one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world.

Orlando is one of the world's premier travel destinations. More than 35 million people visit every year, and enjoy the many attractions and events that make Central Florida such a fantastic place to visit. The main tourist areas of Orlando are International Drive, Kissimmee and Lake Buena Vista.

Florida's west coast, known as the Gulf Coast, offers a step down from the liveliness of Orlando's hectic theme park area with a whole host of beach resorts that take advantage of the warm waters and golden sands that are synonymous with this beautiful area. The Gulf Coast features the world-renowned resorts of Clearwater and St Pete Beach.

International Drive

I-Drive is a suburb of Orlando itself; a sizeable district clustered around a five-mile long stretch of road (no prizes for guessing its name!) that is Orlando's tourist centre. As you can imagine, there are plenty of entertainment and shopping options in this area, and it's best seen locally by strolling around and marvelling at the bright lights and lively atmosphere.

Kissimmee

This is a purpose-built resort that was designed when Orlando began to burst at the seams with holidaymakers drawn in to the ever-increasing number of local theme parks. As a consequence, with its proliferation of family-friendly hotels, restaurants and bars, the laid-back holiday atmosphere here in Kissimmee resembles a kind of theme park in itself and provides an ideal base if you're here to enjoy the well-known theme parks that are all literally just a few minutes' drive away.

Lake Buena Vista

This is yet another centre of tourism in the Orlando suburbs and boasts the Walt Disney World Resort literally right next door, which means Lake Buena Vista is centrally-located for pretty much all of the other theme parks as well. All the usual over-the-top touristy facilities are here, so you can expect great shopping and a superb choice of family-oriented eateries, all done with the slick American razzmatazz we've come to know and love!

Clearwater

The powdery white sands here have featured on many a promotional poster, and the blue skies, shallow waters & hot sun make Clearwater a wonderful choice for a holiday virtually all year round. There's a great lively nightlife here that is popular with younger holidaymakers.

St Pete Beach

A suburb of St Petersburg, this is a delightful coastal resort with a proud cultural history dating back to the early 16th century. There's a laid-back atmosphere wherever you go in St Pete Beach, and yet there's a massive choice of activities and local attractions, where everything from watersports, restaurants and entertainments are readily available. Add the simply superb white sandy beach, and you have a charming beach holiday destination.

In Florida the hurricane season generally runs from June-November. Please refer to the Weather section of this guide for weather patterns and travel advice.
