A pearl of the Aegean Sea, Kos is one of the most-loved islands in Greece. With a rugged coastline stretching 112 km, there is no shortage of beaches, harbours, resorts and archaeological sites. Kefalos, on the south-west peninsula, was the first capital city and has since evolved into a popular tourist destination. Holidays to Kefalos allow you to take in the traditional Greek Island architecture and culture, explore the ancient Old Town and spend lazy days along the pebbled bays and sandy beaches.
Kefalos is famous for its white-washed town, but the nearby bay of Kamari is what usually springs to mind. The sand and shingle beach curves around the coast for 2km, flanked by seafront bars, Greek tavernas and restaurants. Top quality watersports are readily available for those looking for a bit of holiday action. The nearby town of Kampos also has some pretty little streets that you can get happily lost in. Surrounded by local fruit trees and wildflowers, it's a great pit-stop in between swim and sand time.
Just up the hill from the beach is the old town of Kefalos, with its cobbled streets and narrow buildings. Visit the crumbling ruins of an ancient temple and amphitheatre, as well as the beautiful Byzantine church and traditional windmills. There is also an interesting folk museum with a permanent exhibition of what agricultural life was once like. On the outskirts of the town you can find cliff-side caves, although it's quite a steep walk up and down.
Go island hopping
One of the great things about Kefalos holidays is that you can take day trips out to the other islands. The tiny islet of Kastri is just off the coast of Kampos and is easily accessible by boat, or even by swimming for the super-fit. The island itself is completely barren, save for the remains of an old castle sitting high on the peak and a small blue-topped chapel dedicated to Saint Nicolas. The small volcanic island of Nisyros is also worth a visit. Catch a ferry over from Kamari and take a walk around the active volcano. Don't worry, it's completely safe.
Spend the day in Paradise
The aptly-named Paradise Beach is where everyone comes to relax. It's exactly what you imagine it to be; sugar-fine sands, clear cool water, and bright fish swimming just off the beach. Bring your snorkel and a camera to snap some envy-inducing pics. At one end is the bizarre Bubble Beach where you can swim out and paddle around volcanic heated hot springs. Think of it as an ocean version of a Jacuzzi!
A family-run hotel, you'll instantly feel at home at Billy's Studio. Soak up the sun around the swimming pool, terrace and lounge chairs, and then stock up on snacks and fresh fruity drinks at the pool bar. The hotel is also perfectly positioned just 600m from the resort centre, shops and restaurants. Plus the beach is just down the road!
Set back in the mountains, Zeus Hotel is a great option for couples after some peace and quiet. Guests can make the most of the swimming pool, lounge bar and snack bar. A secluded beach is 250m away, and a little group of bars and restaurants are also located nearby. The hotel is set a bit farther out from the main resort centre, giving you plenty of space from the hustle and bustle.
