Located in the warm waters of the Aegean Sea, just off the eastern coast of Greece, Skiathos is a picture-perfect island that, despite undergoing considerable tourist growth over recent years, still protects tradition.
From lazy days on the beach, overlooking the warm waters as they lap up on the sands, to shopping in the boutiques and gift shops found on Papadiamantis Street, your days will be occupied with fun and relaxation. With over 60 beaches to explore, Skiathos is a real treat for beach bums and there's nowhere more perfectly placed to discover the island's beauty than Skiathos Town.
As one of the most famous beaches on the island, Lalaria Beach is a sight to behold. Its turquoise waters wash up on golden sands, with rocky outcrops and eroded archways glistening in the distance. Tripia Petra is recognisable in an instant, particularly if you have seen it on the various postcards sold on the island ' the rock almost forms a bridge between the land and the ocean. Legend has it that if you swim through the hole it has created, you get younger!
Once upon a time, back in the medieval days, Kastro was the capital of the island and can be found within a village of the same name. Get your walking boots ready and enjoy an afternoon of exploration, as you spot the various ruins and buildings that help you to imagine what the area looked like all those centuries ago.
The neighbouring island of Skopelos is unspoilt, beautiful and a must-see sight during your stay. Island hop with the help of a boat trip and you may recognise some of the spots from the hit film musical, Mamma Mia, which was partly filmed here. Join a guided walk and step back in time, or stop for an ice cold drink at one of the street-lined cafés.
Visit the Home of Alexandros Papadiamantis
The island's most famous poet, who gave his name to the renowned street running through Skiathos Town, has a home on the island that continues to be open to the public to this day. Islanders are incredibly proud of their literary hero and his home was transformed into a modern museum following his death in 1911.
Ferry around Greece
Due to the island's placement, you have an abundance of boat and ferry rides to enjoy which will bring you that little bit closer to exploring Greece in its entirety. Book onto one of the popular boat trips that leave from Skiathos Town or neighbouring Koukounaries, and marvel at the breathtaking landscapes that surround you.
Catch the Rays on Megali Ammos
Megali Ammos is the town's nearest beach and definitely worth a visit if you don't want to go far to worship the unending sunshine. While the island is awash with beaches to explore, this one's the closest, with plenty of amenities and watersports to keep you busy. Sunloungers and parasols are available for a little added comfort to help you can catch up on your latest read in style.
