Alykanas is a traditional little fishing village on the island of Zante that sits in the middle of the Ionian Sea. Its combination of turquoise blue beaches, archaeological sites and lush countryside make Alykanas a popular destination for tourists travelling to Greece. Holidays to Alykanas are a relaxing affair, with days spent by the beach or pool, sampling the Greek cuisine at a local taverna, and exploring the charming old town and its ancient ruins.
Alykanas has come to attention in recent years after excavations uncovered Mycenaean vessels, leading scientists to believe Alykanas could be the ancient city of Arcadia. Even just recently, the ruins of a sunken building measuring over 30,000 square metres were discovered just off the shores of Alykanas, with archaeological explorers still working to determine its dates and origins.
With its narrow winding streets and whitewashed houses, the romantic Old Town is exactly what you picture it to be. Largely untouched by the hordes of tourists that descend upon the better-known cities, here you'll be able to take a glimpse into small town life. Simply wander around, strike up a conversation and enjoy an undiscovered way of life. You'll also find one of the most beautiful beaches in the area here ' ask for directions to Xehoriati Beach.
The equally beautiful resort of Alykes is just 1km away with horse-drawn carriages available to take you on a rather unusual ride. Time stops still as you trot along the rugged coastline, taking in the clear views over the sea to Kefalonia. Alykes is popular with families due to its wide sandy beach and shallow still waters. There are the usual sunbeds and parasols for hire, as well as a few resident restaurants serving typical Greek fare such as salty feta salads, swordfish steaks and sugary sweet baklava.
Visit Vertzagio Cultural Museum
For a cultural day out, head over to the rural village of Pigadakia to check out the Vertzagio Cultural Museum. Visitors can take a tour on the little train to see what life was like in Zante over 200 years ago. It's a lot of family-friendly fun, as kids can learn to appreciate the traditional homes, schools and farms. See how the Greeks made wine, flour and olive oils, and then enjoy the train ride back down to Alykanas.
