Holidays to Malta

Overview

As one of the smallest countries in the world, you’d be surprised at what holidays in Malta have to offer. This island which floats in the deep blue of the Mediterranean has a lot to show for its size, yet still manages to maintain tranquillity for those who are longing for a relaxing break.

Malta is a real class act of a holiday destination. The dramatic landscape is dotted with reminders of the island’s rich history, with architectural delights at every turn. More than your average summer holiday destination, Malta encourages you to explore beyond its stunning coastline - both inland and out to sea.

Places to Go

Islands of Comino and Gozo

Malta holidays are all about Island, and the islands of Comino and Gozo mean that you’re getting a three for the price of one destination. Gozo is a fantastic place for a wander, boasting the UNESCO site of the Ggantija Temples. Be sure to also peer through the ‘Azure Window’, a table-like rock structure that juts out to sea, providing a picture perfect vista.

Comino is the smaller of the two Maltese islands and it’s easy to walk across in just a few hours. Alternatively, explore the secluded sandy coves and bays, or snorkel the crystal waters – don’t forget to pack a picnic!

The City of Mdina

The island’s ancient city of Mdina will transport you back in time more than 4000 years, to the apparent home of the apostle St Paul. Breathtaking examples of Medieval and Baroque architecture have been perfectly preserved, providing a sneak peak of days long gone. Those with an appetite for the macabre will love to explore the underground dungeons, and those with a real thirst for culture need to also visit the nearby historical village of Rabat.

Popeye Village

While Malta’s architectural gems and rich history may appeal to adults, those holidaying with kids will want to add some light relief to their Malta package holidays – and it doesn’t come much lighter or brighter than the Popeye Village. The set of the 1980’s film starring Robin Williams has been left untouched in Anchor Bay, with a play park, boat rides and interactive film workshops to add extra fun for little fans of our spinach-guzzling friend.

Things to Do

Church Spot

Religious or not, churches have to be admired for their undeniable beauty and feats of construction. You’ll be spoilt for choice as even the tiny island of Gozo has over 20 churches to spot! Must see’s on Malta holidays include the stunning Stella Maris Church in Sliema, St Paul’s Cathedral in Mdina, the Mosta Dome - boasting one of the largest church domes in the world - and Malta’s most prized treasure, the UNESCO protected St John’s Cathedral in the beautiful island capital of Valletta.

Tee Off

While Malta may only have one golf course, it’s a brilliant one that those serious about spoiling a good walk shouldn’t miss. The Royal Malta Golf Club is an 18 hole course set in lush greenery that looks even better in the bright Malta sunshine.

Explore the Coastline

Malta offers a different experience to your typical beach resort, with its dramatic coastline offering much more than just a place to catch a tan. Wander the hills, coves and cliffs that drop into the bright blue of the Med and enjoy an island that’s completely unspoilt and as nature intended. While beaches aren’t common here, if you do want soft sands, gorgeous Mellieha Bay delivers.

Taste Malta

From a traditional rabbit stew known as ‘Widow’s Soup’ that found at a tiny Maltese cafés, to the freshest seafood at the fishing port of Marsaxlokk, Malta has an individual taste of its own. Wherever you are on the island you’ll be able to find examples of authentic cuisine, but the bustling central square in Bugibba is one of the most atmospheric places to treat yourself to a lively lunch, dinner or drinks.
