Seals not birds
The origin of the Canary Islands’ name is a subject of speculation but doesn’t actually come from the chirpy yellow bird at all. It could be from the Monk Seals which used to inhabit the islands or because the islands used to be home to many types of dog (Canariae Insulae is Latin for ‘Island of the Dogs’).

Marvel at the black sands
Tenerife’s Mount Teidi is the third highest volcano in the world but the most breathtaking by-product of the volcanic atmosphere are the jet black beaches that can be found all over the Canaries – head to Ajuy in Fuerteventura for spectacular black sand beaches.
