You’re all wrapped up, there’s ice beneath your feet, you have an ‘in case of emergency’ umbrella and 6 months’ worth of tissues in your bag; winter in the UK can be harsh to say the least.

Across the world other countries are basking in the sun. So why don’t you take your holiday a little later this year and enjoy some amazing winter sun.

Here are some of our favourite destinations to choose from.

This laidback yet lively destination is perfect if you want to escape the chill of the British winds. With temperatures hitting the high 20’s and low 30’s from November to February, topping up your tan couldn’t be more enjoyable.

Enjoy the seven mile powder-soft white beach in Negril for the ultimate in relaxation, before taking a dip in the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea. With the Jamaican pace being so relaxed, you’ll feel like you’re resting even when taking part in various activities. Explore the underwater spectacles that lie just beneath the surface with a little diving at James Bond Beach, and get up close with the colourful marine life; or check out the coral reef at Public Beach.

If you want a bit more activity, then head to Montego Bay, where horse riding, zip lining, golf and rafting will give you hours of fun. You could even head into the Blue Mountains for a hike or cycle, and get a truly in-depth look of what this stunning island encompasses.

With an endearing vibe that flows throughout the streets, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported back in time. Absorb the whirlwind of colours and embrace the unique culture in temperatures ranging from 18 to 28°C.

With fabulous pristine beaches throughout Cuba, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Varadero Beach is a popular choice to feel the soft golden sand between your toes, as you unwind and achieve a bronzed winter look. Other beaches such as Cayo Coco in Jardines Del Rey, offer white sands and a tranquil atmosphere; ideal for sipping cocktails in the sun.

There’s plenty more to do in Cuba other than chilling on the beach. For the more active tourists take a trip to Cuba’s highest peak in the Sierra Maestra Mountains. The view here is spectacular and provides a look over some of the country’s most beautiful scenery. Nature lovers can also head to the tranquil Turquino National Park and observe exotic plants, flowers and wildlife. Don’t forget to immerse yourself in this unique culture by cruising around in a classic car, try your hand at cigar rolling and check out the fascinating Revolution Square in Havana.

Dominican Republic

Dominican Republic

One of the most diverse countries within the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic offers the ultimate in relaxation. Make the most of the diverse beaches, lagoons, towering mountains and waterfalls in temperatures of 30°C.

Get a complete paradise vibe as you relax on the Dominican Republic’s cayos (islands) such as Isla Saona. This palm fringed island is just off the coast of Bayahibe and provides soft white sand, clear blue waters, coral gardens filled with colourful marine life, and tropical birds in the stunning gardens. Feast your eyes on all this whilst topping up your tan.

Of course it’s important to check out the entire utopian aspect of this beautiful country. Take a shower at Salto Del Limón, a huge waterfall hidden in the depths of the palm forest; perfect for adventurers and nature lovers. Then there’s the Gri Gri Lagoon, tucked behind San Juan which you can explore on a boat trip, before going for a swim or snorkel in a secluded cove.

Wildlife and beauty comes in abundance here, and watching it is the perfect way to beat the winter blues. Take an off-Road safari where you can see various sugar plantations, huge rivers and tropical rainforests, or snap pictures of humpback whales on the Samana Peninsula. More than 10,000 whales venture to this destination between mid-January and March; some travel from as far away as Norway.

This is only the beginning of what these fabulous destinations have to offer. But if you’re bored of seeing a constant stream of rain pass by your window, pack your bags, take an adventure and seek out that coveted winter sun.
