Although family holidays are often the highlight of the year, all too often we can get stuck in a rut, visiting the same tried and tested destinations again and again.

So why not consider somewhere different for your next getaway? Here are some suggestions to get you started…

Ibiza

Synonymous with clubbing, drinking and all-day partying, Ibiza isn’t the first place that springs to mind when considering a family holiday.

However, away from popular resorts such as Playa d’en Bossa and San Antonio, there is an outstandingly beautiful island of alternative resorts to discover.

For families, you can’t beat Cala Llonga. Not only is there a great selection of self-catering apartments and family-friendly restaurants, but you can also enjoy sweeping golden sandy stretches, gently sloping safe waters, a playground and small amusement park.

Italian Lakes

The Italian Lakes are often considered to be the preserve of those looking for a romantic break. However, on Lake Garda there are several resorts each with their own unique character, along with some fantastic locations perfect for families.

Peschiera is one of the best options for those with kids. Mums and Dads can enjoy the beautiful architecture of the medieval town and beautiful harbour, while the pedestrianized centre makes it safe for exploring with little ones.

Two fantastic theme parks, Gardaland and Caneva can be reached by a short bus ride, and just 10 minutes from the resort centre, kids can enjoy building sandcastles and splashing around on the beach.

For those with older children, day trips to Milan and Venice are easily reachable directly on the train.

Morocco

The idea of a family holiday to Africa may have seemed impractical up to now, especially with little ones.

However, with short flight times of around 3-4 hours, you can enjoy a taste of the exotic in Morocco without the hassle of a long-haul journey.

Agadir is the perfect option for a Moroccan beach break. The blue flag sandy beach stretches over 9 km long, perfect for sandcastle building and sea splashing. With a number of all-inclusive hotels in the resort, you can enjoy the ultimate in relaxation. Many offer crèches and kids clubs, allowing mums and dads some time off too.

Older families can enjoy escorted tours around the souks of Marrakesh, 4×4 safaris, dessert exploration and treks in the beautiful Atlas Mountains.

Iceland

Families who are keen on the great outdoors could consider Iceland for their next holiday.

Those with older children should base themselves in Reykjavik from where they can enjoy day trips to imposing volcanoes and spouting geysers. Further highlights include whale watching, dog sledding through frozen landscape, and relaxing in the thermal outdoor waters of the Blue Lagoon. And of course if you are lucky enough you may even get to witness the technicolour light show of the Aurora Borealis. Geography lessons will never be the same again.

Wildlife lovers will love visiting the adorable elephant orphanage and spotting majestic leopards at Yala National Park. Those looking for cultural treasures can plan trips to magical temples, monasteries and tea plantation.

For a truly authentic experience, families with older kids could visit Kataragama – a remote pilgrimage town where you can witness colourful nightly temple ceremonies.
