Roquetas de Mar literally means 'small rocks of the sea', but there is also plenty of sun and sand to be found along this 15km beach. As one of the most popular destinations on the Costa de Almeria
in the south of Spain
, holidays to Roquetas de Mar offer a relaxing seaside escape, minus the crowds of Barcelona or Marbella.
Once a sleepy fishing village, Roquetas de Mar has undergone a massive resort-style makeover and is fully equipped with watersports, Blue Flag beaches and a promenade overflowing with local tapas bars and sangria stands. There are also several nature parks with trails for bird-watchers, cyclists and walkers, as well as theme parks for the kids and archaeological ruins for the history buffs. Roquetas de Mar is known to be one of the sunniest spots in Europe (clocking up around 3,000 hours of sunshine a year) but luckily has managed to remain largely undiscovered from the busloads of sun-seeking tourists. If you're looking for a Spanish break, be quick to snap up a Roquetas de Mar package holiday from Direct Holidays before the secret is out.
15 minutes away from Roquetas de Mar is Almeria, the capital of the province and an up-and-coming tourist destination. Set at the foot of a mountain, Almeria is full of ancient cathedrals, convents, fortresses and palaces. Wander around the winding streets, shop at the chic boutiques, or enjoy a jug of sangria in the sun.
Punta de Entinas Sabinar National Park
Southwest of Roquetas de Mar is Punta de Entinas Sabinar, a protected park and nature-lover's dream. It's a great area for bird-watching ' over 150 different species have been recorded, but keep an eye out for flamingos, herons and avocets in particular. There is also beautiful flora and rare fauna to be discovered amongst the sand dunes and freshwater lakes.
Hit the beach
After all, that's the main reason why you're going, right? Roquetas de Mar has some beautiful stretches of clean Blue Flag beaches, starting at Aguadulce in the east and running down to Puntas Entinas, an unofficial naturist zone! In between, you'll find Playa de las Salinas, a breezy beach perfect for watersports, Roquetas Old Town and Urbanizacion, the main tourist area with a palm tree-fringed promenade.
Food, glorious food!
Spain is famous for its food, and Roquetas de Mar is where you'll find some of the best tapas in the world. A seaside village, the restaurants around Roquetas de Mar receive fresh seafood every day from the local fishermen. Make sure you try the regional specialities: seafood with rice and lobster, pasta stews, and traditional Andalusian-style fried fish.
Join in the local festivities
While the nightlife is relatively low-key, it's the annual festivals and fiestas that draw in the crowds. The Spanish love to celebrate their patron saints, with the most important being the Virgen del Carmen which pays homage to the patron saint of fishermen. If you're not there in July however, don't worry. The Town Council puts on several other free concerts throughout the year, so there's a high chance you'll be able to catch a jazz, pop, classic, children's or even a flamenco show while you're in town.
A two-hotel complex, Zoraida Resort is a great option for families. Kids can play on the submerged pirate ship and waterslides, while mum and dad can enjoy traditional tapas plates in the on-site restaurants and bars. There is also a disco, video game room and daytime entertainment and activities. The resort is centrally located ' just a few steps to the beach and the city under 1km away.
